The Position:  40% teaching, 40% research, 20% university service

  • working with KU’s Institute for Digital Research in the Humanities (IDRH) to further develop DH courses and research across humanities disciplines
  • conduct digital research in humanities leading to peer-reviewed scholarly production in appropriate venues and to external funding applications as appropriate

  • Ph.D. or be ABD in a humanities-related field of study
  • specialization in computationally-assisted analysis in a humanities discipline as evidenced through graduate coursework, dissertation research, publications, and/or externally funded research grants

The DoC will also direct day-to-day communications team operations, guiding and managing team members and their work.

  • Defining and implementing Data & Society’s online presence and branding, including website, social media, and online publishing channels.
  • Ensuring D&S online presence is updated, responsive to current events, and reflective of internal work happening at D&S.
  • Mediating and expanding Data & Society’s relationship to media institutions and individual journalists, including serving as an intermediary between people in our orbit and journalists.
  • Maintaining appropriate content platforms (e.g., blog channels, academic journals, etc.) to increase visibility of relevant work and to help build the field.
  • Oversight of all external-facing product positioning and releases, in line with product strategy.
  • Supporting professional development for researchers and residents in media training, personal brand development, and writing for a variety of audiences.
  • Development and implementation of regular series of workshops for journalists and editors focused on D&S issues.
  • Maintaining a visible communications calendar for the year, coordinating with Research and Programs to schedule key launches, organizational communications products, and events.
  • Building and maintaining appropriate tools to track key issues in policy, industry, and advocacy that might affect the D&S network.
  • Mapping and maintaining a network of stakeholders, knowing who to connect to whom.

Qualifications:

  • 5-7 years leadership and team management experience in communications or a related field.
  • Extensive project management experience.
  • Experience working with journalists and producing communications products.
  • Familiarity with research production outputs.
  • Highly collaborative and communicative.
  • Familiar with creative development processes, with the ability to effectively manage multiple projects while adhering to tight deadlines.
  • Excellent writing, speaking, and editorial skills.

Whittier College Digital Studies – Instructors for Game and Web Design

whittier-college_416x416Whittier College’s Digital Liberal Arts Program invites applications for adjunct instructors to teach one or both of two new introductory courses in game design and web design starting in Spring 2017, with opportunities for renewal. These media studies courses are offered within the context of a liberal arts program, and allow for creativity in course content and design. Candidates are encouraged to offer these classes in a cultural studies framework, and must be able to teach them at the times indicated. The course descriptions are below.

Course Descriptions:

INTD 245: World Wide Web: Origins, Form, and Function (MW 11am-12:50pm)- This course will introduce students to designing and publishing for the web. Students will be prepared to produce a user driven design that is appropriate for Web-based content. Equipped with a historical understanding of the web’s evolution and key industry-standard design guidelines to ensure strong online presentation, students will have a foundational knowledge of website creation and apply it to the planning, design and development of their own web page over the course of the semester. By the end of this course students will be comfortable creating, coding and posting basic HTML and CSS files to the Internet. No previous knowledge of Web publishing is necessary.

INTD 246: Introduction to Game Design (W 7-10pm)- This course offers an introduction to the fundamentals of game design and game studies. Students will gain historical background, critical cultural perspectives, and hands-on experience creating analog and digital games. Through reading, game playing, and creating their own games, they will develop their understanding of gaming as an aspect of culture. The topics will give students a broad theoretical, analytical, and conceptual understanding of game design. Topics covered include iteration, rapid prototyping, mechanics, dynamics, flow theory, the nature of fun, game balance, and user interface design. We will learn several ways to approach the design of a game, and processes and best practices for prototyping, playtesting, and balancing a game after it has been designed.

Required Education and Experience:

  • MA or PhD in Media Studies, Game Studies, or the equivalent
  • Experience designing a course and acting as instructor of record

The Role

  1. You will serve as Data & Society’s primary press liaison, helping inform and connect journalists with expertise within the Institute and its wider network.
