Digital Publishing Librarian – Columbia


The Columbia University Libraries seek a creative, service-oriented Digital Publishing Librarian to lead publishing services for its Digital Scholarship division. This new position reports to the Assistant Director of Scholarly Communication and Projects and is part of a newly-formed team that encompasses scholarly communication, digital humanities, and emerging technologies. The Digital Publishing Librarian occupies a key role, helping define, execute, and assess digital publishing partnerships with the Columbia community, including developers, library subject specialists, project managers, faculty, and students.

Digital Scholarship Technologist – one year appointment – UMass Amherst


Job Description:

The UMass Amherst Libraries seek a dynamic and innovative Digital Scholarship Technologist. The Digital Scholarship Technologist develops applications and tools to support incoming and ongoing academic research projects, with a focus on building infrastructure to support digital scholarship. In collaboration with stakeholders, identify requirements, develop workflows, and implement digital services solutions for incoming and ongoing research projects and curricular initiatives. Potential projects may include data mining, text analysis and other related digital scholarship methods, consultation on solutions for digital scholarship projects.

This position is a one year (12 months) term appointment.

Examples of Duties:

  1. Work in close partnership with the Digital Scholarship Center, the Digital Media Lab Unit, and other library departments to prioritize projects, recommend strategies and implement applications and technologies to support digital scholarship services.
  2. Contribute to the development of digital tools and platforms for analysis, visualization, presentation, and reuse of content. Design, program, and/or adapt existing tools in support of digital scholarship.
  3. Analyze client requests to develop specifications for academic programs by applying digital scholarship methods, statistical pattern learning, and digital evidence.
  4. Work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality, and inclusiveness within the Libraries and the campus.Attend professional development activities as assigned or required to meet departmental goals and objectives.
  5. Performs related duties as assigned or required to meet Department, Executive Area/Division, and University goals and objectives.
  6. Understands responsibilities with respect to conflicts of interest and behaves n ways consistent both with law and with University policy.
  7. Contributes toward creating a positive and respectful workplace defined by personal and professional competence, integrity, and collaboration.
  8. Understands and contributes to implementation of departmental and institutional goals for achieving non-discrimination and creating a respectful, inclusive environment that is supportive of diversity.

Requirements:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Information Systems.
  2. Two years of Application Programming and Development experience.
  3. Working knowledge or advanced training with OCR, Python, XML and SQL.
  4. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and the ability to interact effectively and work productively to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with a diverse population.
  5. Demonstrated experience with application development in at least one major programming language such as Ruby on Rails, PHP, Perl, and/or Java.
  6. Demonstrated knowledge of development of web applications in a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MysQl, and PhP) environment.
  7. Ability to work independently and collaboratively, prioritizing work to meet departmental and library goals. Ability to exercise sound judgment.
  8. Ability to master new information technologies and explain them to others.
  9. Working knowledge of Linked Data principles.
  10. Working knowledge of Geographical Information Systems.

Library Digital Strategist – Western Michigan University

Overview

Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine has a great opportunity for a Library Digital Strategist.  You would work as a member of the library’s team to develop, support and manage web-based systems and services, including the library’s website and digital collections.  Responsible for creating robust systems that facilitate search, discovery, curation, and the delivery of library services and content in an agile environment. Be able to create and maintain cross-platform designs to provide cross-platform navigation for the library’s digital solutions. This person should understand how to maintain the integrity and reliability of the library’s virtual presence and its resources.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the development and management of the library’s digital architecture to support web-based systems and dissemination of digital content.

  • Administers, customizes and maintains the library’s EZ Proxy server and configuration, and all cloud-based library service platforms, including BrowZine, DOCLINE, Google Analytics, ILLiad, ProQuest Intota, and SpringShare LibGuides, LibCal and LibAnalytics.

  • Recommend and implement software solutions that are compatible with and complementary to the current library systems.

  • Evaluates information resources and integrates new technologies in the delivery of health information services.

  • Interacts and consults with IT staff in implementing and maintaining the library’s technical infrastructure.

  • Serves as the primary contact to all the library’s systems vendors. Works with vendors to track and resolve problems that cannot be addressed in-house.

  • Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of library services, policies and procedures.

  • Assists the library director in the extraction of data and statistics from library web based systems.

  • Experience providing support to end users.

  • Demonstrated interest and aptitude for technologies relevant to medical education and clinical practice.

  • Advises library staff of current trends in library system technologies and mobile technologies.

  • High degree of organizational, analytical, and critical thinking skills.

  • Troubleshoot functionality issues and resolve access errors for electronic resources.

  • Willingness to contribute to the profession through scholarly publications and professional service activities.

  • Ability to work occasional rotations for evening and weekend hours as scheduled.

  • Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree, with a technical major and/or a minimum three years’ experience in library systems administration.

    • Master’s degree in a program accredited by the American Library Association preferred.

    • Basic knowledge of one or more scripting and/or programming languages, including CSS, HTML, Javascript, and Python.

    • Ability to effectively manage the lifecycle of the library’s electronic resources, including acquisition, access, administration, support, and evaluation with a specialization in demand-driven systems.

    • Knowledgeable of web design practices, including navigation, information architecture, and usability.

    • Experience in setting up, providing access to, and troubleshooting issues with electronic resources through cloud-based service platforms, proxy server, and OpenURL linking.

    • Advanced knowledge and proficiency in using personal computer equipment and related software.

    About Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine

    As a newer US medical school, WMed is an exciting environment to pursue an academic career. The medical school is a collaboration of Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo’s two teaching hospitals, Borgess Health and Bronson Healthcare. Planning for the new medical school began in 2008 and achieved full accreditation of the MD program by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education in 2018, and candidate status for institutional accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission in 2016.  The school welcomed its inaugural class in August 2014, and is a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation supported by private gifts, clinical revenue, research activity, tuition, and endowment income. The home of the new medical school includes the WMU Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine Clinics, a modern 60,000-square foot clinical building on the Oakland Drive Campus, and a 350,000-square foot educational building in downtown Kalamazoo located on the W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus. The building, donated by MPI Research, underwent a $68 million renovation and expansion project, including a 24,000 state-of-the-art Simulation Center. In 2016, an additional $10 million expansion created two floors supporting clinical and laboratory research, and the medical school acquired the Innovation Center, a 69,000-square foot, purpose-built incubator and co-working space, located on the Parkview Campus.

    There are more than 200 residents and fellows in nine residencies and three fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). WMed is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) for continuing medical education.

    Teaching Specialist/Lecturer in Multimedia Storytelling & Popular Culture – University of Minnesota


    The Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota invites nominations and applications for a full-time, nine-month instructional position in multimedia storytelling and popular culture. This is a 100%-time, annually renewable position over the nine-month academic year (late-August to late-May). This position begins fall semester 2018 (08/27/2018). This is an academic professional position at the rank of teaching specialist or lecturer, consistent with University policy and depending on qualifications. Salary is competitive.

    About the Position

    Lecturers and teaching specialists in the Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication provide classroom teaching that supplement faculty offerings and expertise. Lecturers and teaching specialists develop and teach courses; advise students with regard to academic concerns and school-related organizations; provide service-related teaching duties, particularly in the area of developing students’ entrepreneurial skills relevant to career readiness in the media industry; participate in the decisions relating to the policies, courses and programs in which there is involvement; contribute appropriate service to the school, college, and University; continue personal growth within the profession; and keep current with the field and broaden knowledge and expertise.

    The Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication seeks an outstanding instructor and/or a practicing professional with expertise in multimedia storytelling. The School is especially interested in reviewing applications from individuals willing and able to teach three courses each term in the following areas: multimedia storytelling, media and popular culture, and media and diversity. Professional experience and training supportive of providing service and engagement support for an anticipated new Hubbard School center in media entrepreneurship and digital strategy is desirable. This position will be responsible for teaching six semester courses per academic year (3/3 distribution) in these areas.

    This position is subject to the Administrative Policy: Appointments of Academic Professional and Administrative Employees; the Administrative Policy: Academic Appointments with Teaching Functions, and additional policies and procedures.

    Qualifications

    Required: B.A. in journalism, communication, or closely related field with an emphasis in multimedia storytelling is required for appointment as a teaching specialist. Ph.D. or terminal degree (M.F.A., Professional M.A., or equivalent M.A.) in journalism, communication, or closely related field with an emphasis in multimedia storytelling is required for appointment as a lecturer.

    Demonstrated successful undergraduate teaching in journalism, communication, or closely related field with an emphasis in multimedia storytelling; and/or demonstrated successful professional work experience in multimedia storytelling and reporting on contemporary problems in media and popular culture, or similar professional work experience in journalism is required.

    Preferred: A minimum of two (2) years of full-time successful undergraduate teaching in multimedia storytelling; and/or a minimum of four (4) years of full-time successful professional experience in multimedia storytelling and reporting on contemporary problems in media and popular culture, or similar professional work experience is preferred.

    Qualifications

    Candidates for the positions of Professor/Associate Professor must hold a PhD in a relevant area, and should have an outstanding record of research publications. Extensive experience of postgraduate supervision is a requirement for the rank of Professor. Candidates for the position of Assistant Professor must hold a PhD in a relevant area, and have a demonstrable capacity to develop a strong research profile. Candidates for the position of Senior Instructor must hold a postgraduate degree and/or extensive relevant industry experience. For the above-mentioned positions, candidates should have teaching experience and expertise in one or more of the following areas: communication theory; cultural & media studies; public communication and new media studies. While candidates must be fluent in English, ability to speak Chinese may be considered an asset, though it is not a prerequisite for the appointment.
