Director of the Digital Research Commons, University of Houston Libraries

1216px-university_of_houston_logo-svg The Director of the Digital Research Commons will be a key leader in University of Houston Libraries expansion of services for advancing the digital research productivity of UH faculty, staff, and students. Reporting to the Head of Digital Research Services, the director will manage the day-to-day activities of the Digital Research Commons. Coordinating with Libraries’ external partners, including the UH Division of Research, the Center for Advanced Computing and Data Services, and colleges, the director will contribute to faculty and student digital scholarship projects by providing services for collaboration, program planning, and interdisciplinary digital projects.

Primary Duties:

  • overseeing Commons operations including budgets, facilities, technology, grants, projects, and assessment
  • coordinating with other Libraries divisions, UH Division of Research, Center for Advanced Computing and Data Services, and other academic colleges and university centers
  • development, implementation, and support of Commons projects and services

Required Qualifications:

  • American Library Association (ALA)-accredited Master’s degree
  • demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex projects involving many stakeholders simultaneously

  • project management experience
  • experience with designing, implementing, evaluating, and optimizing models for digital scholarship programs and emerging practice areas
  • ability to work in team-based environment, both within the Libraries and with faculty, staff, and students
  • knowledge of data mining and data visualization research tools, experience with grant writing, and coursework or advanced degree in history, digital humanities or other humanities fields or social sciences preferred.

Applicants’ research and teaching interests should emphasize intersectionality and emerging media, including how social forces produce social injustice and inequality based on gender, race, class, sexuality, ability, and other axes of identity.

ATEC faculty include artists, designers, computer scientists, social scientists, cultural theorists, and reflective practitioners who seek to collaborate on intentional future-making through the creation of new cultural forms, the design of new technological experiences, the production of new knowledge, and the transformation of the culture industries. Linda Hall Library Fellowships

The Linda Hall Library invites pre-and post-doctoral scholars for its 2017/18 fellowships in the history of science and related areas of science and technology studies. The Library offers researchers a setting that allows for deep immersion in its outstanding collections and a rich intellectual community of in-house experts, fellows, and scholars from nearby Kansas City institutions.

Fellowships are awarded for the duration of 1 week to 10 months, in three forms.

  1. Residential Fellowships: pre- and post- doctoral scholars whose work would benefit from research in the Library’s collections.
  2. 80/20 Fellowships: a pilot program for pre-doctoral fellow to spend 80% of the time pursuing dissertation-related research in the Library’s collections and 20% gaining valuable career-related skills by planning, curating, and installing an exhibition based on the fellow’s research and the Library’s holdings. This fellowship is for the entire academic year (10 months) during which time the fellow will work concurrently on his/her research and the exhibition under the mentorship of the Library’s VP for Public Programs and in collaboration with the Library’s Communications Department.
  3. Travel Fellowships: for researchers who wish to make a short, exploratory visit to the Linda Hall Library may apply for a travel fellowship. Typically last 1-3 weeks.

Major strengths of the Linda Hall Library collection include: engineering, natural history, physical sciences, astronomy, life sciences, environmental studies, aeronautics, earth sciences, Cold War science, infrastructure studies, and mathematics. Researchers also benefit from having access to rare books and other primary sources in the Library’s History of Science Collection and supporting monographs, journals, technical standards, patents, and government reports from its general collections.

Fellows pursuing interdisciplinary projects can also take advantage of Linda Hall Library’s reciprocal borrowing privileges at nearby libraries, including the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), Kansas University’s Clendening History of Medicine Library, and the Spencer Art Reference Library at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

Marion L. Brittain Postdoctoral Fellowship Composition, Business/Tech Comm, and Digital Pedagogy

lmcbuttoncopyThe Writing and Communication Program in Georgia Tech’s School of Literature, Media, and Communication seeks recent PhDs in rhetoric, composition, technical communication, literature, film, linguistics, visual rhetoric/design, and related humanities fields for the 2017-2018 Brittain Postdoctoral Fellowship. This fellowship, renewable up to three years, includes a 3/3 teaching assignment or equivalent, Instructor rank, and full faculty benefits.

Three teaching areas:

  1. Candidates with experience teaching rhetoric, composition, multimodality, digital humanities, and digital pedagogy will be considered for opportunities to teach first-year composition. Special consideration will be given to candidates who have a particular interest in research in rhetoric, composition, or related areas.
  2. Business/Technical Communication: Candidates with experience teaching business, professional, or technical communication will be considered for opportunities to teach conventional tech comm classes, business/professional communication classes, or specialized linked sections for students in computer science.   3. General Information for All Fellows:

  • Teaching: All Brittain Fellows design courses informed by their research interests within a framework of common programmatic outcomes. All courses are based on rhetoric, process, multimodality, digital literacy, and humanistic perspectives in a technological world.
  • Research: Fellows are expected to continue their scholarly agendas and are encouraged to extend them to include research in areas such as pedagogy, multimodality, writing/communication center research, digital humanities, media literacy, instructional innovation, business/technical communication, and assessment.
  • Professional Development: Fellows are supported in their professional development toward academic and non-academic career paths through projects such as programmatic assessment, grant writing, administration, publishing, and public relations.
  • Service: Fellows serve on and chair committees that act as change agents to help shape programmatic initiatives in areas such as innovative technologies, special events, digital publication, curriculum development, ELL and cross-cultural challenges, and community outreach.

Funding is available for outstanding doctoral students for 4 years of study.  Funding support includes two years of fellowship (year 1 and year 4) and two years of teaching assistantships (year 2 and year 3).  Tuition is covered by the School.  Students in the MA and MFA programs may also be funded through research assistantships and teaching assistantships.

Applicants for the Ph. D program must have earned a master’s level degree in a relevant field, and submit a portfolio that includes a written essay of interest, an example of academic writing, and evidence of creative practice or research experience.

Five or six fellowships will be awarded each year to deserving scholars engaged in graduate level, post-doctoral, or independent study to conduct research in the JDC Archives, either in New York or Jerusalem. Research topics in the fields of twentieth century Jewish history, general history, and humanitarian assistance will be considered, as well as other areas of academic research covered in the JDC archival collections.ny_00047_da1

The JDC Archives documents the relief, rescue and rehabilitation activities of the organization, from its inception in 1914 to the present. The repository houses one of the most significant collections in the world for the study of modern Jewish history.
